Challenges

A divided world

by Mónica S. De Vera

In a world marked by polarization and conflicts that tear nations, cultures and communities apart, talk of peace sometimes sounds like a distant dream. Violence, mistrust and division seem to grow unchecked, and global solutions seem too big or too slow. Yet there are places where the response to this immense challenge begins quietly, locally and profoundly human.

The 7th Asian Mission, held February 9-16, 2025, in Malasiqui, Bayambang and San Carlos City, Pangasinan in the Philippines, was one such place. Under the theme "Made for Mission, Made for Peace," young people from different parts of Asia-especially the Philippines, Korea and Japan-came together to bring peace through small, concrete acts of service.

"For me, this mission was more than an activity. Although I had participated before, this year I was part of the preparation team, and that changed everything. Serving was not just about helping: it was about learning to connect with other young people, strengthening my faith and experiencing love and acceptance in times of difficulty. I discovered that God calls me to things I previously thought impossible and that, when I say 'yes,' He works in amazing ways in me." Monica, the 23-year-old coordinator of the Jusem Philippines, shares with us.

"One of the most impactful moments was visiting a mother in San Carlos City, whose children work for relatives in order to pay for their studies. Despite her struggles, she greeted us with a smile and words full of gratitude to God. She reminded me that true love is recognizing God in the midst of pain and continuing to love unconditionally."

This is the heart of our mission: in a world that cries out for quick solutions, we respond with small but constant gestures of hope. Peace comes not only through great treaties or speeches, but when concrete people, in concrete places, decide to love and serve.

God's love does not free us from difficulties, but it accompanies us in them. And when we share it, it becomes a light for others. What we experienced in this mission is proof that, in the face of the enormous global challenge of division and conflict, there is a real, close and transforming response: young hearts ready to build peace, an encounter, a smile and an act of love at the same time.
