Challenges

Apathetic adolescents

by Gloria Gómez

At a time when many adults sigh that teenagers "no longer feel anything," "go their own way" or "live disconnected from everything, even from faith and solidarity," something profoundly different has happened in Córdoba (Argentina). What seemed impossible - to see teenagers touch the hearts of other teenagers with a message of faith and hope - became a reality: twenty young people, aged between 14 and 16, lived a coexistence that could be described as a small miracle.

We had been dreaming about this meeting for years, but this time it was not adults who took it forward. Four teenagers -Tomás and Emiliano (twins), Macarena and Brisa- together with Valentín, in charge of logistics, took on the challenge of guiding the whole experience. They themselves, with their words and gestures, announced the faith to their own age mates.

The fruit was surprising: shared laughter, sincere talks, games that united, silences that spoke louder than a thousand sentences, and prayers that touched the soul. In one of those moments, a teenager who led the reflection left us all with a challenge: "Let yourself be loved by God... don't just understand him with your head, feel him with your heart. God melts with love for you". The silence that followed revealed that this message had touched deep fibers.

There was also a very visual dynamic on eternal life, which helped to recognize that every choice leaves its mark and that not everything is the same. But perhaps the most powerful moment was when each participant wrote a letter to Jesus, confessing what happened when they moved away from Him: lies, damages, distances from love... Then, one by one, they approached, sat down next to Christ and tore up their letter in silence. A simple gesture, but full of meaning.

In days when it seems impossible to connect with young people, this sharing showed that it is possible. It requires trust, giving them a leading role and believing that the Spirit is also at work in them with strength. What happened in Cordoba is not just a nice anecdote: it is proof that, when given the opportunity, teenagers not only listen, but also announce, love and spread faith. And that is perhaps the best response to one of the great challenges of our time.
